Salutogenesis: Appreciative Inquiry in an Academic Setting

Salutogenesis: Appreciative Inquiry in an Academic Setting

Salutogenesis enquires into what supports life and wellbeing. It contrasts with pathogenesis, which seeks to understand the processes by which a disease or disorder develops. Dr Jane Culpan will discuss how this contrast influences her work in an academic setting.

Jane leads the BSc (Hons) Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing programme at Queen Mary University in Edinburgh. She sees her work as an opportunity to embed constructs of wellbeing and salutogenesis within a degree focused on the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for working with others to improve their health and wellbeing.

In this month’s online Appreciative Space ,Wednesday 10th September 11.00-12.00 BST, Jane will discuss her journey through the topics of pathogenesis/salutogenesis and how she has developed her understanding of using appreciative methods in academia.

For more on the origins of Salutogenesis see:

Aaron Antonovsky (1923–1994): The Personal, Ideological, and Intellectual Genesis of Salutogenesis | SpringerLink

Held on the second Wednesday of each month Appreciative Space encourages appreciative inquiry practitioners to share stories of their work with churches and other organisations as part of a self-sustaining community of practice.

The zoom link for each session is available through the members area of the Appreciating Church website, for an annual registration fee of £30: https://appreciating.church/register/

You are welcome to email enquiries@appreciating.church if you would like to try a session before committing to membership.
